The original building in School Lane was put up in 1922 by men of the village of Countess Wear who survived the First World War, being built upon land given by the villagers on a 99-year lease by Lady Granger.
Then in 1965 Lady Granger's heirs gave the freehold of the land to the village in trust.
Regular social functions have revived interest in the hall. It now operates as the venue for classes in subjects as varied as flower arranging, dance and yoga, and is available for hire for other social functions.
A new hall, with improved heating, sound insulation and services, would allow for a wide range of activities including a much needed 'play group' and offer a more suitable recreational environment for the elderly or disabled.
